Nomad Airstream Rally

On Friday, October 10, we headed north to Plattsburgh, NY and Cumberland Bay State Park for Nomad Airstream's second annual rally. While the temps were chilly, making new friends, eating good food, meeting "old" friends, enjoying good wine, and even better beer, throw in good music, and some great bonfires, made for a real warm environment. With all that, the cold we could put up with.

We arrived around 3:00 pm on Friday and after putting some water in our tank, found our spot and got settled.

Part of getting settled in, was putting up our Windsock- the first time we have flown it at an event. Coincidentally, the windsock sports the New Mexico Zia image - also the name of our trailer, and this blog.

Rigs kept rolling in until we had almost a complete circle.....

Steven & Guillaume delivering 4 packs of Detour IPA -specially flown in from Utah just for this event. The beer featured an airstream on label. Nice touch Steven & Guillaume!

About 5 o'clock we started wandering over to the Nomad Food(and Beverage) trailer, where a wonderful selection of craft beers, wines, h'oerderves were available. Also included was a good meal. All of this was catered by The Blue Collar Bistro from Plattsburgh. Steven and Guillaume really know how to do it right.

At 8:00 we did a "movie on the beach"  - RV with Robin Williams. Appropriate and awesome. And Cold. The popcorn was great. Thoroughly enjoyed by all. After the movie, it was back to the circle, for bonfire and souvenir picture wagon......

Saturday started with a breakfast in the big hall(inside). We were free for the day. Mary and I took the opportunity to visit the Mall and pick up a few things. On the way back we stopped for lunch at Gus' and they filled up the truck with gas for the return trip.

Saturday night dinner was excellent, a choice of chicken or salmon - or both if you desired. Food was great. We also celebrated some birthdays.

Mellow Yellow preparing for the nights show

Saturday night was great - huge bonfire and great music performed by Mellow Yellow group from Burlington, Vt.

The weather prior to sunday had been cloudy and windy. Sunday brought a new day and much better weather - blue skies, hardly a cloud in the sky. The only thing the sky was full of were Canadian Geese. They were there in the thousands. Must be Plattsburgh Bay is a stop over point in their migration south.

After another nice breakfast, we had a quick meeting of the White Mountains Unit to discuss what was in the planning stages for next year. Dick Wheatley wanted to firm up so that it could be published in first issue of Blue Beret next year and also so people could plan. There were some interesting ideas for events presented, and we look forward to the final list.

For the rest of the morning, most of us took the opportunity to just sit outside our trailers and enjoy the nice hot sun, the pleasant atmosphere, and chats with friends. Some even got involved with the Flea Market that was put on. If you had some things that you wanted to "part with", you set up a table and accepted offers from those that might be interested. Our neighbor to our left, Frank, was an active buyer. He found a ceramic heater that impressed him as well as some other "trinkets". Our neighbors on the other side of us, Robert and Bernard, were sellers. They had quite a bit of stuff on their table. Surprisingly, most of it sold. I actually wandered over to Jerry Carruba's tables and found a couple of things that interested me- rods with magnet bases for lining up / hooking up trailer. Couldn't go wrong for $2. I also found something for Mary at David & Lori Peirce's table - a Dammit Doll and a nice glass Airstream replica. Again, for $2 I couldn't say no.

While all of this was going on, I had our Yamaha generator running to charge up batteries in trailer. Also hooked up our friend next door(Frank) so that his batteries could charge. Since this was dry camping(no electricity, no water hookups), we were pretty frugal on electric use. In fact, when we went to bed at night, we turned off the furnace(propane) to conserve, rather than having the furnace coming on every 20 minutes or so. Got pretty cold inside of the old girl and sunday morning it was actually down to 41 degrees inside. Turning on the furnace, had it nice and comfy within about 20 minutes.  When I saw people tent camping it made me appreciate the Airstream and the furnace even more.

A little later in the morning, we had a treat. One of our fellow campers took David Peirce up in his plane and they got some pics of our group from overhead. We all waved and the plane waved back.

Dinner sunday night was another good one.....Lasagna! Another enjoyable evening chatting with friends, enjoying good food. All this was followed by another awesome bonfire(they seemed to get better each night), and some great music provided by IncaHoots.

Unfortunately, monday morning did come and that meant it was time for us to leave. As usual I was up bright and early and by 8 o'clock had everything picked up and put away, the trailer hooked up, and the tanks emptied. We were all ready to go. But first, it was one more breakfast. It was another good breakfast - Macdonough Haystacks. An interesting name for an interesting meal and it came with a story. Towards the end of the meal, our server interupted all to fill us in on the story of MacDonough and the haystacks. Nice touch, and very interesting. Then it was time to say goodby to all of our friends and neighbors: The Peirces, the Lehners, the Wheatleys, Jerry and Paulette, Frank and Willy, Robert and Bernard, Steven and Guillaume. What a great 3 days we spent there. So sorry to have to leave. But leave we must because we are now on the countdown- 7 days until we leave for Arizona. And so much to do before we leave..........
