On Oct 12, we left Enchanted Trails RV Park in Albuquerque and headed west on I 40 to Holbrook, AZ. The trip covered approximately 223 miles and paralleled the old RT 66. We planned on using our stay at
OK RV Park there as a base to explore the area via 1 day trips to various points of interest.
 |
The entire area is all about Petrified Wood |
This park features long, and I mean long, pull throughs.....
 |
We arrived early in the PM, by night the park was almost full. Lots of overnight traffic..... |
Our day trips included: A visit to Winslow, AZ and while in the area, a trip to Homolavi State Park and Little Painted Desert. A second day took us to Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park.
Winslow, AZ. This was a must while we were in the area. The pictures kind of tell the whole story....

|
From Winslow it was a short trip to Homolavi State Park.
Walking in to the Visitors Center, a certain sign caught my attention.....
 |
Fortunately for me, we didn't see any |
The Park was kind of neat and featured a drivable road and stops where you could get out and explore. It also featured ancient ruins and a large collection of viewable shards......
 |
Old ruins |

Another old ruin |
 |
We saw these all along the way, these are pieces of old pottery |
When we left Homolavi State Park, we drove North towards the Hopi Reservation for about 15 miles until we came to Little Painted Desert State Park. The parking area let us see some pretty amazing sites.....
Our next one day trip took us to Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park. This was truly an amazing trip and our friends Dave and Kathy were right - you really did need to plan on a full day. The entire trip through the park is about 28 miles and the scenery is unbelievable. Again, I'll let the pics do the talking for me.....
 |
Among the Petrified Wood |
When you travel 28 miles, you see a lot of things:
 |
Puerco Pueblo |
 |
Petroglyphs |
 |
BNSF Train heading west |
 |
1965 Plymouth Barracuda |
 |
Amazing the number of Petrofied pieces of wood |
From Petrified Wood to the Painted Desert.....
 |
Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark |
The stay in Holbrook would not be complete without a trip to Jim Gray's Petrified Wood Company.....
The things that we saw there were truly amazing - what they have done to petrified wood.

The price on this piece was over $9000 |
While in Holbrook, we visited some local restaurants and for the most part came away with favorable impressions.
Tom & Suzies Diner for breakfast one morning,
Mandarin Beauty Restaurant one day for lunch, and
Mesa Italiana Restaurant for dinner one night.
Our 4 day stay ends on sunday, Oct 16. We pack up and head to Flagstaff KOA for another 4 day stay which will include a few day trips. More to follow as we head west to Yuma.
